AGELLI (*Ajelli, Agellius*), ANTONIO. — Born in Sorrento in 1532, died in Rome on 19 November 1608. He entered the Clerics Regular of the Theatines of Saint Paul Major in Naples in 1551 and devoted himself to the study of biblical languages in Rome, favored by the future Cardinal Sirleto. He was appointed superior of the Theatine house in Genoa in 1572 and in Cremona in 1579. An active member of various pontifical commissions for the biblical text, he collaborated on the revision of the Vulgate under Saint Pius V, on the edition of the Greek version of the Septuagint curated by Sixtus V, and again on the revision of the Vulgate up to the Clementine edition of 1592. Appointed Bishop of Acerno by Clement VIII in 1593, after governing with zeal he resigned in 1604 to dedicate himself to his studies among his confreres in Rome (at Saint Sylvester on the Quirinal).
Agelli’s principal biblical works, written in good Latin, are: *Commentarius in Threnos collectus ex auctoribus graecis et in eosdem explicatio et catena graecorum Pa-trum ex eiusdem versione*, Rome 1598; *Commentarius in Psalmos et Cantica*, Rome 1606 (his major work). The following appeared posthumously: *Comm. in Proverbia Salomonis*, Venice 1649; *Commentarius in prophetam Habacuc*, Antwerp 1697. Other works remain in manuscript.
