SIRLETO, GUGLIELMO. - Cardinal, b. at Guardavalle (Squillace in Calabria) to a certain Tommaso in 1514. After a period of study in Naples, around 1540 he is found in Rome, where he first came to know Girolamo Seripando and then also Marcello Cervini, with whom he was very close.

He immediately frequented the VaticanLibrary and from the study of the classics turned to that of the sacred authors, availing himself of his good knowledge of the Greek language. During the first period of the Council of Trent he was in assiduous correspondence from Rome, whence he did not move, with Cervini, who consulted him, while he also attended to critical annotations on the text of the Vulgate and to preparing editions of the Fathers. He was custodian of the Vatican Library when Paul IV in Jan. 1557 named him apostolic protonotary. St. Charles Borromeo worked so that Pius IV would create him cardinal on 12 March 1565, also as a reward for the collaboration given to Cardinal Seripando during the third phase of Trent, and for his contributions to the publication of the sacred texts. Pius V on 6 Sept. 1566 conferred on him the see of S. Marco in Calabria, and in Nov. the Saint went to take up residence, but was recalled by the Pope in March 1567 and never again left Rome, although on 27 Feb. 1568 he was transferred to the see of Squillace, his diocese of origin. He governed it by means of a vicar until 15 Apr. 1573, when he resigned in favor of his nephew Marcello. The Saint continued to lend precious assistance in everything that had to do with the sciences and with sacred erudition. He thus collaborated in the edition of the Catechism of the Council of Trent, in the reform of the Missal and the Breviary, in the edition of the Latin Bible and of the Corpus iuris canonici, in the Congregation of the Index of Prohibited Books; he maintained active correspondence with the most illustrious ecclesiastics of his time and gathered a precious library. He died in Rome on 7 Oct. 1585 and was buried in his titular church of S. Lorenzo in Panisperna. His rich correspondence is in the Vatican Library, together with his manuscripts.
