Baima, Giovanni

BAIMA, GIOVANNI. - Born at Pinerolo on 17 Jan. 1817, died at Rome on 6 Apr. 1881. He professed among the Oblates of the Virgin Mary on 2 Aug. 1833, and set out for the mission of Ava and Pegu, of which he was elected vicar apostolic. He was consecrated bishop on 25 Apr. 1849 in Calcutta. Worn out by the very harsh climate and by his labors, he had to return to Europe in Apr. 1856. Here he was given the task of substituting for the exiled archbishop of Turin, Msgr. Fransoni, and occasionally for the bishops who were lacking owing to the government's opposition, in a good part of the dioceses of Piedmont, until 1867. Appointed primate of Sardinia, he left Turin on 27 Dec. 1871 for Cagliari, where for a decade he carried out a fruitful activity of religious renewal.
