BEATRICE OF TUSCANY. - Marchioness, b. in Lorraine around 1015, d. at Pisa on 28 April 1076. Daughter of Frederick, Duke of Upper Lorraine, and left an orphan of both parents early on, she was taken in, together with her sister Sophia, by her aunt, the Empress Gisela, wife of Conrad II the Salian. At the imperial court she was able to acquire great political experience, which she later exercised against her cousin Henry III, when, having married in 1036 Boniface of Tuscany, she induced her husband to ally himself with other powerful lords and, with their support, to rebel openly against the emperor in 1047. When her husband died in 1052, she married, in a bold political stroke, her cousin Godfrey the Bearded, a noted enemy of Henry III, and he then, indignant, imprisoned the proud marchioness and took her with him in his retinue to Germany. On the emperor's death, B. was sent back free to Italy by the regent Agnes (1056). Having lost her husband (1069), she and her daughter Matilda placed themselves entirely at the service of the Pope; and the letters of Gregory VII show that he counted them as his most faithful auxiliaries.
