BELLUTI, BONAVENTURA. - A most learned Scotist philosopher and theologian of the Conventual Minors, born at Catania around 1600 and died there on 18 May 1676. He studied theology at the college of S. Bonaventura in Rome, where he had as a companion the celebrated Fr. Mastrio. Besides being fellow students and subsequently fellow teachers at Cesena, Perugia, and Padua, these two theologians were also akin in intellect, so much so that «eadem lingua loqui, eodem calamo scribere, eodem ingenio speculari viderentur» (Hurter, IV, col. 10). Together they composed the Philosophiae ad mentem Scoti Cursus integer (5 vols., 1st ed., Venice 1637), which is a treasure of Scotist philosophy and was rightly compared to the theology of the Salmanticenses. B. subsequently became provincial minister of Sicily (1645-48) and there consultant to the Royal Inquisition.
He wrote: Disputationes de Incarnatione Dominica ad mentem Scoti (Catania 1645); Liber Moralium opusculorum atque Resolutionum miscellaneo apparatu digestorum (ibid. 1679, posthumous), and De sacramento Eucharistiae (manuscript).
