BONGARS, JACQUES. - French diplomat, b. at Orléans in 1554, d. at Paris on 29 July 1612. After studying first in Germany and then in France, he went to perfect his philological studies in Rome, where in 1581 he published an edition of St. Justin with excellent critical notes. Having returned to France after long travels throughout Europe, he was appointed in 1586 secretary to Henry, king of Navarre, and in 1588 was sent to England, to Holland, and finally was dispatched to Germany in 1593 with the title of resident for the king of France at the courts of the princes of the Holy Roman Empire. After the assassination of Henry IV, he obtained his recall to Paris, and during his last years he devoted himself to his favorite studies.
Among his works should be mentioned: Gesta Dei per Francos (Hanau 1611), which is the first collection of documents concerning the history of the crusades; Collectio Rerum Hungaricarum Scriptorum (Frankfurt 1600), an important source for the history of Hungary, also rich in transcriptions of Latin inscriptions. In 1647, moreover, 2 volumes of Epistolae were published, with much information concerning the history of his time. Bongars's very rich library today constitutes one of the most precious holdings of the Library of Bern.
