BONONIO, saint. - Abbot of Lucedio in the Vercelli area, d. 1026. A Camaldolese monk, among the most fervent followers of s. Romualdo, he lived for some time in the monastery of S. Stefano in his native city, Bologna. He then went as a pilgrim to Egypt, of which he was called the apostle, and lived as a hermit on Sinai. Around 990, recalled to Italy by the bishop of Vercelli, Pietro, he was appointed abbot of Lucedio, where he remained until his death (1026); in the same year Giovanni XIX canonized him.
