LUCY OF NARNI, Blessed. - A religious of the Third Order of St. Dominic, b. on 13 Dec. 1476 at Narni, d. at Ferrara on 15 Nov. 1544. At the age of twelve L. made a vow of virginity, but she later consented to be joined in marriage to a count named Pietro, because he had accepted the condition of respecting her virginity. Slandered by malicious persons, she was imprisoned by her spouse, until, set free, she received from him permission to live as she wished. Then she entered at Narni the Third Order of St. Dominic on 30 Apr. 1494. In 1495 she was transferred to Rome to the convent of St. Catherine of Siena, and in 1496 she passed to the monastery of St. Thomas at Viterbo, where on 24 Feb. of that same year she received the sacred stigmata.
When Duke Ercole d'Este requested to have the Blessed in his city, the Pope consented. At Ferrara L. took charge of the Christian and civil education of noble maidens, and obtained from Duke Ercole the foundation of a monastery, which she dedicated to St. Catherine of Siena (1501); of it she was made prioress, though reluctant. From 1503 L. prayed God to make the stigmata invisible to her, while still leaving her the pain, and she was heard; the wounds of the hands and feet closed, only that of the side remaining open, which she could hide. Her rivals took advantage of that event to strengthen the accusations of prior feigning, and they did so much that they succeeded in persuading the others; the Blessed was deposed from her office and relegated to a secluded cell, where amid many humiliations, in concealment and solitude, she spent the last 38 years of her life. At her death, the worthlessness of the machinations stirred up against her in life was recognized from the wound of the side. Her body is preserved in the church of the monastery; the cult was ratified by Clement XI in 1710. Feast on 16 Nov.
