CARIANI, GIOVANNI - Madonna with Child and Donor (1520).

CARIANI, GIOVANNI DE' BUSTI. - Born probably in Venice to a father from Bergamo, he studied in that city, where he was living in 1509, and where he is found again in 1547. In his paintings, mingled with elements derived from Giorgione, from Palma and from Lotto, there is always present a vague recollection of Lombard coloristic taste.

Among his best works are remembered the Andata al Calvario of the Ambrosiana, characteristic for the superimposition of new elements upon the old, and for the convulsed composition in its movement, and the Madonna col Figlio e santi in the Brera picture gallery, also in Milan. Other paintings of his are found at the Accademia Carrara and in private houses of Bergamo (Madonna con donatore, Cristo portacroce e Gruppo Albani); at the Accademia of Venice (Gentiluomo in pelliccia); and in London, Berlin, Strasbourg. A Sacra conversazione con la Madonna che cuce against the background of a beautiful landscape is at the Corsiniana, in Rome.
