CARBONELLI (CARBONELL), PONCIO. - Franciscan, b. about 1260, d. in 1350 at Barcelona.
In 1278 he entered the Franciscan Order, and later became guardian of the convent of S. Francesco at Barcelona. Between 1288 and 1295 he was the tutor of s. Ludovico, later bishop of Toulouse, while the latter was in Spain as a hostage for his father Carlo d'Angiò, prince of Salerno, and of the infante Giovanni d'Aragona. In 1314 Giacomo II sent him to his brother Federigo, so that the latter might expel the Fraticelli from Sicily, and in 1315 the same ruler sent him to arrange peace between the said Federigo and Roberto di Napoli (H. Finke, Acta Aragonesia, II, n. 448). C. was confessor to Giovanni, infante d'Aragona and archbishop of Toledo. In 1336, as provincial minister of Aragon, he took part in the promulgation of the Constitutions of Cahors, and in 1337 in the General Chapter of the Order.
He wrote: Commentaria in Universam Bibliam ad singula loca collectis abunde SS. Patrum sententiis, ita ut non inepte soccari possit Catena SS. Patrum in universam S. Scripturam. Since this work was composed according to the same method as that of s. Tommaso d'Aquino, some wished to attribute C.'s Catena to the latter; but the two works are independent of one another. That of C. is preserved in manuscript in 6 vols. in the library of the convent of S. Giovanni dei re, at Toledo.
