Carbonelli (Carbonell), Poncio

CARBONELLI (CARBONELL), PONCIO. - Franciscan, b. around 1260, d. in 1350 at Barcelona.

In 1278 he entered the Franciscan Order, and was later guardian of the convent of St. Francis at Barcelona. Between the years 1288 and 1295 he was the teacher of St. Louis, later bishop of Toulouse, while the latter was in Spain as a hostage for his father Charles of Anjou, prince of Salerno, and for the infante John of Aragon. In 1314 he was sent by James II to his brother Frederick, so that the latter might drive the Fraticelli out of Sicily, and in 1315 he was sent by the same to make peace between the said Frederick and Robert of Naples (H. Finke, Acta Aragonesia, II, n. 448). C. was confessor of John, infante of Aragon and archbishop of Toledo. In 1336, as provincial minister of Aragon, he took part in the publication of the Constitutions of Cahors, and in 1337 in the General Chapter of the Order.

He wrote: Commentaria in Universam Bibliam ad singula loca collectis abunde SS. Patrum sententiis, ita ut non inepte socari possit Catena SS. Patrum in universam S. Scripturam. Since this work was composed with the same method as that of St. Thomas Aquinas, some wished to attribute C.'s Catena to him; but the two works are independent of each other. That of C. is preserved in manuscript in 6 vols. in the library of the convent of St. John of the Kings, at Toledo.
