CODA, BENEDETTO. - Painter, b. in Venice, or in Ferrara, or in Treviso, d. after 1530. From September 1495 he was in Rimini. Vasari considers him a pupil of Giovanni Bellini, but perhaps the Venetian influence evident in his works reached him through the mediation of N. Rondinelli, whom C. may have met in Ravenna; in his late works, however, the influence of the Ferrarese school prevails.
His oldest work known to us is the Madonna with the Child and Four Saints in S. Domenico in Ravenna, dated 1513. From 1515, on the other hand, are the Madonna of the Rosary and the Marriage of the Virgin, both in the picture gallery of Rimini, where six small panels with figures of saints in a rather late manner are also found. Other works are attributed to him in Rimini and in Pesaro.
His son BARTOLOMEO was also a painter, active for a long time in Rimini and in the Marche. For S. Rocco in Pesaro he painted a picture with the Madonna and Two Saints, beneath which Lanzi read the date 1528; from 1541 is an Annunciation at the Madonna del Monte in Cesena. In 1562 Bartolomeo C., together with his nephew Francesco di Sebastiano C., received a commission to paint an altarpiece for the church of S. Domenico del Mercato in S. Severino, of which the panel with the Pietà in the local picture gallery is perhaps a part.
