BENEDETTO CODA. — Painter, born in Venice, Ferrara, or Treviso, died after 1530. From September 1495 he was in Rimini. Vasari claims he was a pupil of Giovanni Bellini, but the evident Venetian influence in his works may have reached him through the mediation of N. Rondinelli, whom Coda may have met in Ravenna; in his later works, however, the influence of the Ferrarese school prevails.
His earliest known work is the *Madonna with the Child* and four saints in S. Domenico, Ravenna, dated 1513. The *Madonna of the Rosary* and the *Espousal of the Virgin*, both in the Rimini picture gallery, date from 1515; there are also six small panels with figures of saints in a rather late manner. Other works are attributed to him in Rimini and Pesaro.
His son Bartolomeo was also a painter, active for a long time in Rimini and the Marches. For S. Rocco in Pesaro he painted a picture of the *Madonna and Two Saints*, beneath which Lanzi read the date 1528; an *Annunciation* at the Madonna del Monte in Cesena is dated 1541. In 1562 Bartolomeo Coda, together with his nephew Francesco di Sebastiano Coda, received a commission to paint an altarpiece for the church of S. Domenico del Mercato in S. Severino, of which the *Pietà* panel in the local picture gallery may be a part.
