CODA, BENEDETTO. - Painter, born in Venice, or Ferrara, or Treviso, died after 1530. From September 1495 he was in Rimini. Vasari considers him a pupil of Giovanni Bellini, but perhaps the Venetian influence evident in his works reached him through the mediation of N. Rondinelli, whom C. may have known in Ravenna; in his late works, on the other hand, the influence of the Ferrarese school prevails.
His earliest known work is the Madonna with the Child and Four Saints in S. Domenico in Ravenna, dated 1513. The Madonna of the Rosary and the Marriage of the Virgin, both in the picture gallery of Rimini, date instead from 1515; there are also six small panels with figures of saints in a rather late manner. Other works are attributed to him in Rimini and Pesaro.
His son BARTOLOMEO was likewise a painter, active for a long time in Rimini and the Marche. For S. Rocco in Pesaro he painted a picture with the Madonna and Two Saints, beneath which Lanzi read the date 1528; an Annunciation at the Madonna del Monte in Cesena dates from 1541. In 1562 Bartolomeo C., together with his nephew Francesco di Sebastiano C., received a commission to paint an altarpiece for the church of S. Domenico del Mercato in S. Severino, of which the panel with the Pietà in the local picture gallery is perhaps a part.
