COMPIÈGNE, the Martyrs of, Blessed. - They are the sixteen Carmelites of the convent of the city, guillotined in Paris on 17 July 1794 "for their attachment to puerile beliefs and their foolish religious practices." At the foot of the guillotine they sang the Te Deum and the Veni Creator, renewed their baptismalvows and their three religious vows, then one by one, having asked the prioress for the blessing and permission to die, they won the palm of martyrdom.
Their names are: the mothers: Teresa of St. Augustine (Maria Maddalena Lidone), prioress; Henrietta of Jesus (Maria Gabriella di Croissy); the sisters: Anne of Jesus Crucified (Marianna Piedcourt); Anne of St. Louis (Marianna Brideau); Charlotte of the Resurrection (Anna Maria Thouret); Euphrasia of the Immaculate Conception (Maria Brard); Teresa of the Heart of Mary (Marianna Hanisset); Teresa of St. Ignatius (Maria Gabriella Trézelle); Giulia Luisa of Jesus (Rosa Chrétien de Neufville); Maria Henrietta of Providence (Anna Pelras); Constance (Maria Meunier); Mary of the Holy Spirit (Angelica Roussel); St. Martha (Maria Dufour); St. Francis (Elisabetta Vérolo); the two sisters Catherine and Teresa Soiron. Beatified by Pius X on 27 May 1906, feast on 17 July; the Carmelites celebrate their feast on the 24th of the same month.
