COMPIÈGNE, THE MARTYRS of, Blessed. - They are the sixteen Carmelites of the convent of that city, guillotined in Paris on 17 July 1794 “for their attachment to childish beliefs and their foolish religious practices.” At the foot of the guillotine they sang the Te Deum and the Veni Creator, renewed their baptismal vows and the three religious vows, then, one by one, having asked the prioress for her blessing and permission to die, they won the palm of martyrdom.
Their names are: the mothers: Teresa di S. Agostino (Maria Maddalena Lidone), prioress; Enrichetta di Gesù (Maria Gabriella di Croissy); the sisters: Anna di Gesù Crocifisso (Marianna Piedcourt); Anna di S. Luigi (Marianna Brideau); Carlotta della Risurrezione (Anna Maria Thouret); Eufrasia dell'Immacolata Concezione (Maria Brard); Teresa del Cuore di Maria (Marianna Hanisset); Teresa di S. Ignazio (Maria Gabriella Trézelle); Giulia Luisa di Gesù (Rosa Chrétien de Neufville); Maria Enrichetta della Provvidenza (Anna Pelras); Costanza (Maria Meunier); Maria dello Spirito Santo (Angelica Roussel); S. Marta (Maria Dufour); S. Francesco (Elisabetta Vérolo); the two sisters Caterina and Teresa Soiron. Beatified by Pio X on 27 May 1906, their feast is on 17 July; the Carmelites celebrate their feast on the 24th of the same month.
