CSERNOCH, JÁNOS. - Cardinal, b. June 18, 1852 at Szakolcza, d. July 25, 1927 at Esztergom. He completed his theological studies in Vienna and was ordained a priest in 1874. In 1879 he received the chair of biblical studies at the seminary of Esztergom, winning the esteem of Cardinal Archbishop J. X. Simor for his abilities, who appointed him master of ceremonies and primate archivist. In 1900 he was among the founders of the Catholic Party in Hungary.
Elected bishop of Csanád in 1908, three years later he moved to the archiepiscopal see of Kalocsa. On the death of Card. Vaszary (1913) he was transferred to Esztergom and became primate of Hungary. In the Consistory of May 25, 1914 he was created by Pius X cardinal of the title of St. Eusebius. During the Bolshevik regime of Béla Kun he was forced to leave his see. When King Charles, emperor of Austria, left the country, the primate, to whom, according to the constitution, it fell to impose the sacred crown of St. Stephen, swore that he would not crown a new sovereign until the death of the exiled one.
