CSERNOCH, JÁNOS. - Cardinal, b. 18 June 1852 at Szakolcza, d. 25 July 1927 at Strigonia. He completed his theological studies in Vienna and was ordained priest in 1874. In 1879 he obtained the chair of biblical studies in the seminary of Strigonia, winning the esteem of Cardinal Archbishop J. X. Simor for his gifts; Simor appointed him master of ceremonies and primatial archivist. In 1900 he was among the founders of the Catholic Party in Hungary.
Elected bishop of Csanád in 1908, three years later he was transferred to the archiepiscopal see of Kalocza. Upon the death of Cardinal Vaszary (1913), he was transferred to Strigonia and became primate of Hungary. In the Consistory of 25 May 1914, Pius X created him cardinal of the title of S. Eusebio. During the Bolshevik regime of Béla Kun he was compelled to leave his see. When King Carlo, Emperor of Austria, left the country, the primate, who according to the constitution had the duty of placing upon him the sacred crown of s. Stefano, swore that he would not crown a new sovereign until the death of the exiled one.
