DOBMAYER, MARIAN. — Benedictine theologian, born at Schwandorf (Bavaria) on 24 October 1753 and died at Amberg (Bavaria) on 21 December 1805 (according to others, in 1803). Already a Jesuit, after the suppression of the Society in 1773 he entered the Benedictine Order at the monastery of Weissenhe (Bamberg), where he took his vows in 1775. Ordained a priest in 1778, he was professor at Neuburg, Amberg, and Ingolstadt.
His Systema theologiae catholicae (8 vols., Sulzbach 1807–19), edited by T. P. Senestrey and abridged by E. Salomon (P. M. D. institutiones theologicae in compendium redactae, 2 vols., ibid. 1823, 1833), was judged one of the best theological works of the last century. But this judgment was considerably qualified because of the erroneous theory that the pope derives the irrefragability of his supreme pronouncements not from his authority, but from the consent of the bishops. In addition to the works mentioned, the following are also by him: Conspectus theologiae dogmaticae (Amberg 1789); Regula fidei ac theologiae catholicae (Sulzbach 1821).
