DOBMAYER, MARIAN. - Benedictine theologian, b. at Schwandorf (Bavaria) on 24 Oct. 1753 and d. at Amberg (Bavaria) on 21 Dec. 1805 (according to others in 1803). Formerly a Jesuit, after the suppression of the Society in 1773 he entered the Benedictine Order in the monastery of Weissenhe (Bamberg), where he took his vows in 1775. A priest in 1778, he was a professor at Neuburg, Amberg and Ingolstadt.
His Systema theologiae catholicae (8 vols., Sulzbach 1807-19), edited by T. P. Senestrey and drawn up in compendium by E. Salomon (P. M. D. institutiones theologicae in compendium redactae, 2 vols., ibid. 1823, 1833), was judged one of the best theological works of the last century. But the judgment was greatly qualified on account of the erroneous theory that the pope derives the irrefragability of his supreme pronouncements not from his own authority, but from the consent of the bishops. Besides the works mentioned, we have from him: Conspectus theologiae dogmaticae (Amberg 1789); Regula fidei ac theologiae catholicae (Sulzbach 1821).
