Ignatius Senestrey
SENESTREY, IGNAZ von. - Bishop, b. 13 July 1818 at Bärnau, in the Upper Palatinate, d. 16 Aug. 1906 at Regensburg.
He studied at the German College and remained in Rome from 1836 to 1842, when he was ordained a priest. He taught at Eichstätt, then was a curate in Munich, parish priest at Kühbach and canon of the cathedral of Eichstätt in 1853. On the presentation of King Maximilian II of Bavaria, he was appointed bishop of Regensburg in 1858. He built the new ecclesiastical seminary, founded junior seminaries at Metten, Straubing and Regensburg, patronized the adoption of the Roman rite, and had the construction of the cathedral completed. He also took the initiative for periodic meetings of the bishops of Bavaria and of all Germany. The Conference of Fulda, which met for the first time in 1867, is the fruit of that effort. At the Vatican Council he was a strenuous champion of pontifical infallibility. He defended the interests of the Church and of Catholics against Bavarian liberal policy. His protest against the accusation of having violated the Constitution and the Concordat for having called some Jesuits into his diocese in 1866 had a particular resonance.
