EDWARD VI, King of England. - B. 12 Oct. 1537, d. 6 July 1553. Son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, he came to the throne at the age of 9 in 1547. In the first two years of his reign power was in the hands of Edward Seymour, duke of Somerset, whom the regency council named Lord Protector. The latter, with the approval of the very young king — a sickly child, but precocious, and endowed with the particular Tudor inclination for study — promoted the further penetration of Protestantism into the country, even in its most fanatical form of struggle against "idolatry," that is, the veneration of sacred images and the Mass, willed above all by the supporters of Calvinism and particularly by Thomas Cranmer, archbishop of Canterbury.
Once Somerset was dismissed — he having, in another field, been unable to conduct successfully his policy of predominance over Scotland, which was victoriously opposed by the French — the council signed peace with France (1550); his religious policy, on the other hand, continued more harshly through the work of John Dudley, earl of Warwick, later duke of Northumberland. During E.'s reign there were the two editions of the Common prayer book (1549 and 1552) and the preparation of the new ordinal of a purely Calvinist stamp.
