EGERTON, PAPYRI - Fragment of a papyrus belonging to the first half of the 2nd century with an extracanonical gospel.
EGERTON PAPYRI. - A group of papyri acquired by purchase by the British Museum and coming perhaps in part from Oxyrhynchus and in part from the Arsinoite nome; catalogued among them, under no. 1, is the famous papyrus of the mimiambi of Herodas, edited by Kenyon (Classical Texts) in 1891; but usually, when this collection is mentioned, allusion is made to the importance of its papyri that concern Christianity. They are: no. 2, with the text of a fragment of an apocryphal Gospel; no. 3, of the 3rd century, with the probable commentary on a text of the Gospels; no. 4, also of the 3rd century, with a passage of II Par.; no. 5, of the 4th-5th century, containing the leaf of a liturgical book, perhaps in connection with the "Mass of the faithful" of the Byzantine rite.
Great importance was rightly given to p. E. 2, of the 2nd or 3rd century, which in the edition of Bell and Skeat has no. 1. Various subjects are touched upon in it: Jesus' discourse to the Jewish scribes (cf. Jn, 3, 19-27); the allusion to the Jews' attempt to stone Jesus (cf. Jn, 8, 59); the episode of the healing of the leper (Mt, 8, 2-4; Mk, 1, 40-44; Lk, 5, 12-14); the question about the tribute to be paid to kings (Mt, 22, 16 ff.); a final episode alludes to a miraculous sowing by Jesus in the Jordan, of which the canonical gospels do not speak. The discussion turns on the relations of this new text with the canonical gospels, because it is neither a cento of known gospels, nor part of an already known apocryphon, and not even the hypothesis that it is a fragment of the so-called Gospel of the Egyptians is demonstrated.
