DAUGHTERS OF THE CROSS, called Sisters of Saint Andrew. - Institute founded at Maillé, diocese of Poitiers, in 1807 by St. Andrew Hubert Fournet and by St. Joan E. Bichier des Ages for the various works of the apostolate, for the instruction of youth and for the care of the sick. Approved first by the French bishops, then by the Holy See in 1867, the institute, spread throughout Europe, America and China, numbers over 2000 sisters in 262 houses divided into 6 religious provinces.
