GALANTE, Andrea. Jurist, b. at Cassel Monferrato on 30 July 1871, d. at Rome on 26 July 1919. A pupil of Francesco Ruffini, from whose school came illustrious representatives of Italian juridical science, he was professor of ecclesiastical law at the University of Innsbruck and, in 1916, was called to succeed Francesco Brandileone in the chair of ecclesiastical law at the University of Bologna; an appointment that met with general approval, G. being considered the most worthy man to teach in the city which bears the title of mother of Italian juridical science.
He devoted his entire life to study, even during the period when, in the First World War, he held high political and administrative offices. Among his notable works are: Il diritto di placentazione e l'economato dei benefici vacanti in Lombardia (Milan 1894); La condizione giuridica delle cose sacre (Turin 1903); L'executur ed il placet nella evoluzione storica e nel diritto vigente (Milan 1909); Il diritto degli ecclesiastici nelle nuove terre d'Italia (Bologna 1916).
Of particular interest, and such that it cannot be omitted from consultation by those who devote themselves to these studies, is the Manuale di diritto ecclesiastico (Milan 1915, 2nd ed., edited by A. C. Jemolo; IV 1923), in which the fundamental principles of the rights of the Church and those of State ecclesiastical law are set forth synthetically and systematically with regard to historical evolution and current norms.
