GALANTE, ANDREA. - Jurist, born at Casal Monferrato on 30 July 1871, died at Rome on 26 July 1919. A pupil of Francesco Ruffini, from whose school eminent representatives of Italian legal scholarship emerged, he was professor of ecclesiastical law at the University of Innsbruck and, in 1916, was called to succeed Francesco Brandileone in the chair of ecclesiastical law at the University of Bologna; an appointment that met with general approval, Galante being considered the man most worthy to teach in the city entitled to be called the mother of Italian legal science.
He devoted his entire life to study, even during the period in which, in the course of the First World War, he held high political and administrative offices. Among his considerable output may be mentioned: Il diritto di placizione e l'economato dei benefici vacanti in Lombardia (Milan 1894); La condizione giuridica delle cose sacre (Turin 1903); L'esequatur ed il place nella evoluzione storica e nel diritto vigente (Milan 1909); Il diritto degli ecclesiastici nelle nuove terre d'Italia (Bologna 1916).
Of particular interest, and indispensable for all who devote themselves to these studies, is the Manuale di diritto ecclesiastico (Milan 1915, 2nd ed. edited by A. C. Jemolo, ibid. 1923), in which the fundamental principles of the law of the Church and those of the law of the State in ecclesiastical matters are set forth concisely and systematically, with regard to historical development and the norms in force.
