JOHN OF READING. - Franciscan theologian of the 14th century. He taught at Oxford no earlier than the year 1319, then moved to Avignon, perhaps to teach in that Franciscan Studium generale. He was there in the year 1323: his name in fact appears among the theologians consulted by John XXII, before the publication of the decretal Antiquae concertationi (1 December 1323).

He wrote a commentary on the Sentences, preserved in cod. Conv. Sopr. D. 4. 95 of the National Library of Florence, which however stops at dist. 5 of Book I. It is supposed to have been completed during his Avignon stay, given that the author cites John of Thornton and Richard of Drayton, his successors in the chair of Oxford, and criticizes the nominalist movement begun by G. Ockham around the years 1318-20, and by Peter Aureol. He knew G. Duns Scotus personally and reports his oral authority: Aliquando mihi dixit; and perhaps he was close to him as a scribe or secretary.
