IGNATIUS OF SAINT PAUL. - Passionist, in the world George Spencer, b. in London on 21 Dec. 1799, d. at Carstairs (Scotland) on 1 Oct. 1864. He completed his studies at Eton College and at the University of Cambridge and received Anglican orders. Having converted to Catholicism in 1830, he was ordained a priest in Rome on 26 May 1832. He devoted himself with zeal to the pastoral ministry in England, beginning in 1838 a fruitful "crusade of prayers for the return of England to the unity of the faith," which he preached and supported not only in England, but also in Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Germany and France. In 1848 he embraced the Institute of the Passionists, and was a valiant and tireless missionary.
