LILYBAEUM. - Ancient diocese of Sicily, today Marsala in the province of Trapani.

The date at which Bishop Gregory lived is uncertain; he is remembered as a martyr by St. Gregory of Agrigento (PG 98, 648). The best known among its bishops is Paschasinus, who in a letter of 417 to Pope Leo I speaks of a "perparva ecclesia" of his diocese (Mansi, V, 1226); he suffered from the Vandal incursion of 439 and was comforted with a letter by the said Pontiff (Jaffé-Wattenbach, 401), who sent him as his representative to the Council of Chalcedon (ibid., 468-469, 476).

The bishops Theodore (ibid., 1254, 1340) and Decius (ibid., 1392, 1523, 1725, 1760) belong to the end of the 6th century.

In L. a monastery was erected in honor of Sts. Peter, Lawrence, Hermes, Pancras, Sebastian and Agnes.
