LILIBEO. — Ancient diocese of Sicily, now Marsala in the province of Trapani.
The date at which Bishop Gregorio lived is uncertain; he is remembered as a martyr by s. Gregorio di Girgenti (PG 98, 648). The best known of its bishops is Pascasino, who, in a letter of 417 to Pope Leone I, speaks of a “perparva ecclesia” in his diocese (Mansi, V, 1226); he suffered during the Vandal incursion of 439 and was comforted by a letter from the aforementioned Pontiff (Jaffé-Wattenbach, 401), who sent him as his representative to the Council of Calcedonia (ibid., 468-469, 476).
The bishops Teodoro (ibid., 1254, 1340) and Decio (ibid., 1392, 1523, 1725, 1760) belong to the end of the sixth century.
In L. a monastery was erected in honor of the saints Pietro, Lorenzo, Ermete, Pancrazio, Sebastiano, and Agnese.
