GREGORY OF AGRIGENTO, Bishop, Saint. - Born at Pretorion, near Agrigento, around the middle of the 6th century; according to his biographer, he would soon have gone to Carthage and from there to Palestine, where he would have entered one of the monasteries of the Sabaites, applying himself to the study of the Scriptures. He then moved on to Antioch and Constantinople, then to Rome, where he entered the monastery of St. Sabas.
When the see of Agrigento fell vacant and discord arose among the electors, the Pope sent G. there as bishop. When accusations had been raised against him, G. was summoned by Pope Gregory to Syracuse, then to Rome, before August 591; in 598 he was again in his see and is also mentioned in 603. There survives by him a commentary in Greek on Ecclesiastes (PG 98, 1181-1228) in ten books; other works have not been preserved. He was venerated in the Eastern Church and is commemorated in the menaia and in the Constantinopolitan Synaxarion on 23 Nov.; he entered the Roman Martyrology only with Baronio.
