MARELLO, GIUSEPPE. - Bishop of Acqui, founder of the Oblates of St. Joseph, born in Turin on 26 Dec. 1844, died in Savona on 30 May 1895.
At the age of 10 he was sent to Asti, where he attended the Seminary, and having been ordained a priest on 19 Sept. 1860, he devoted himself to the priestly ministry, a living example to all of active zeal and profound prayer. A canon of the Cathedral and diocesan chancellor, he was elected bishop of Acqui in 1889. Death overtook him suddenly at Savona, whither he had gone for the centenary feast of St. Philip Neri.
To assist parish priests in the ministry in parishes and in missions, he founded at Asti, in 1870, the Congregation of the Oblates of St. Joseph, who also devoted themselves to youth in the various youth institutions. Approved at once by the bishop, it also received the approval of the Holy See in 1909. The cause of M.'s beatification was introduced in 1948.
