MAROTO, FELIPE. - Canonist, born in Garcillán (Segovia) on 26 May 1875, died in Rome on 11 July 1937. As an adolescent, he entered the Congregation of the Sons of the Heart of Mary (Claretians); he was ordained a priest on 13 May 1900.
Sent to Rome, he obtained the degree in utroque iure at the Apollinare in 1903 and was immediately called to teach in the same Faculty of Law, of which he was also dean. His teaching, which continued until 1934, was highly esteemed for its clarity, depth, and breadth of juridical knowledge; his expertise in matrimonial and beneficial matters was particularly noteworthy. He served as a consultant to various Sacred Congregations (Holy Office, Religious, Council, Propaganda, and Seminaries) and displayed particular activity in the Commission that prepared the definitive drafting of the CIC; in 1935 he was called to be part of the Commission for the authentic interpretation of the CIC. He left numerous writings of great value in the journal Apollinaris and in the Commentarium pro religiosis et missionariis, of which he was the first director. His principal work consists of the Institutiones iuris canonici ad normam novi codicis (Madrid 1918), unfortunately left unfinished; among his last studies should be noted the paper: Regulae et particulares constitutiones singularum religionum ex iure Decretalium usque ad Codicem, in Acta Congressus Iuridici Internationalis, IV, Rome 1937, pp. 205 ff. In the Claretian Congregation he held the most important offices; vice procurator general from 1906, procurator general from 1912 to 1934, and from that year until his death Superior General.
