MAROT, CLÉMENT. - French poet, b. at Cahors on 23 Nov. 1496, d. at Turin on 12 Sept. 1544. A page of Villeroy, he was later valet de chambre to Francis I, enjoying the good graces of the king, who intervened in his favor whenever he found himself in trouble brought about by his biting satire.
Accused of adhering to the reform movement, he left France (1534), taking refuge in Italy, successively at Ferrara and at Venice. Repatriated in 1536, he was received again at court, where he remained until 1542, when, once more suspected because of his translation of the Psalms, he found himself forced to flee first to Switzerland, then again to Italy, taking refuge with the House of Savoy at Turin, where he died shortly afterward. A sensitive, refined poet, he felt the disturbances of an age dense with religious "inquietude." Although his fame is linked essentially to his lyric poetry, M. is a typical figure of the French "reformist" groups.
