MINUTI, THÉOPHILE. — Minim religious, Orientalist, and palaeographer, born at Bras in Provence in 1592, died at Marseille on 8 August 1662. He entered the Minims in 1610 and specialized in the Oriental languages for the interpretation of Holy Scripture.
He travelled in the East on behalf of his learned friend and patron Niccolò Claudio de Peyresc, bringing to France specimens of the New Testament in the Syriac language, a considerable number of Coptic and Samaritan texts, mummies, coins, and medals; he also introduced the bulbs of the tuberose into Europe. But what Peyresc and his friends regarded as the marvel of the collection was a thirteenth-century (?) trilingual codex of the Pentateuch, which M. found in Damascus in 1631, containing the Hebrew text in Samaritan characters, an Arabic version in Samaritan characters, and a paraphrase in the Samaritan language (targim). Peyresc presented it to Cardinal Barberini in 1637, and since then the codex has been held in the Vatican Library, collection
