NICCOLÒ OF OSIMO. - Franciscan theologian and preacher, b. at Osimo in the second half of the 14th century, d. at Rome ca. 1453. In 1438, appointed by Eugene IV custos of the Holy Land, he later resigned it following disputes.
During the general vicariate of St. Bernardino (1438-1441), N. effectively supported him, and while he governed the province of St. Angelo of Apulia as vicar, he composed the Declaratio super regula Fratrum Minorum, later approved by the general of the Order, Guglielmo da Casale (1439), and sent by St. Bernardino to the provinces of the Friars Minor
Observants in 1440 (eds. in Speculum Minorum, Rome 1509; Monumenta Ordinis Minorum, Salamanca 1511; Firmamentum trium Ordinum, Paris 1512). Within the same observance it seems that N. favored the stricter current, for in 1440 he was indeed working with Eugene IV for the total separation from the Conventuals, and when this was granted with the bull Ut sacra of 1446, N. defended it tenaciously against the attacks of the Conventuals; and in 1453 he was part of the commission appointed by Nicholas V for the examination and defense of the bull Ut sacra. He also wrote Supplementum Summae Magistritiae seu Pisanellae (Genoa 1473 and 1474); Quadriga spiritualis, finished in 1442 (posthumous ed., Jesi 1475); Operetta solgiri (ed. G. Spezi, Rome 1865).
