Nobili, Flaminio de

NOBILI, FLAMINIO de. - Theologian and biblical scholar, b. ca. 1530, d. at Lucca in 1590. He concerned himself especially with the Greek version of the Septuagint, cooperating actively in the Sixtine edition of 1587 with better-known exegetes such as P. Morin and G. Maldonado. Once the new commission for the edition of the Vulgate had been formed (1586-90), Sixtus V charged N. with gathering the patristic testimonies of the ancient pre-Jerome version.

The abundant collection was printed in the notes to the Vetus Testamentum secundum LXX latine editum (Rome 1588). In this way N. was the true pioneer of the fruitful investigation, brought to perfection by P. Sabatier (v.), which aims to restore the most ancient biblical text in use in the Latin Church. Some judicious Annotationes in Veteris Testamenti LXX interpretes by N. were even reprinted by B. Walton in his Polyglot Bible (VI, London 1657, no. 9, pp. 1-196).
