NOBILI, FLAMINIO de. - Theologian and biblical scholar, b. ca. 1530, d. at Lucca in 1590. He devoted special attention to the Greek version of the Septuagint, actively collaborating in the Sixtine edition of 1587 with better-known exegetes such as P. Morino and G. Maldonato. When the new commission for the edition of the
Vulgate (1586-90) was formed, Sixtus V entrusted N. with collecting the patristic testimonies to the ancient pre-Jeromian version.
The abundant collection was printed in the notes to the Vetus Testamentum secundum LXX latine editum (Rome 1588). In this way N. was the true pioneer of the fruitful inquiry, brought to perfection by P. SABATIER, PAUL (v.), which seeks to restore the most ancient biblical text used in the Latin Church. Some judicious Annotationes in Veteris Testamenti LXX interpretes by N. were even reprinted by B. Walton in his Bibbia poliglotta (VI, London 1657, no. 9, pp. 1-196).
