MINOCCHI, SALVATORE

MINOCCHI, SALVATORE. - Biblical scholar and man of letters, born at Raggiolo in the Casentino in 1869, died at Travale (Siena) in Aug. 1943. Having entered the seminary without a vocation, he was ordained a priest in 1892. Suspended a divinis in 1907 for his rationalistic and modernist ideas, the following year he laid aside the cassock.

Among his works we may mention: I Salmi tradotti dal testo ebraico comparato con le antiche versioni, con introduzione e note (Firenze 1895; 2ª ed., Roma 1905); Le Lamentazioni di Geremia (ivi 1897); Il Cantico dei Cantici tradotto e commentato (ivi 1898); Il Nuovo Testamento tradotto ed annotato: I Vangeli (ivi 1900); Le profezie di Isaia tradotte e commentate (Bologna 1907); La Genesi con discussioni critiche (Firenze 1908); Mosè ed i libri mosaici (Modena 1911); Il Pantheon. Origini del cristianesimo (Firenze 1914); Le perle della Bibbia: il Cantico dei Cantici e l'Ecclesiaste (Bari 1924). This 2nd ed. of the Cantico dei Cantici, completely different from the first, shows total adherence to rationalist ideas, already adopted in the works on the Pentateuch. Moreover, M.'s production is rather popularizing, with clear literary intentions.
