MINOCCHI, SALVATORE. – Biblical scholar and man of letters, b. at Raggiolo in Casentino in 1869, d. at Travale (Siena) in August 1943. He entered the seminary without a vocation and was ordained priest in 1892. Suspended *a divinis* in 1907 for his rationalist and modernist ideas, the following year he laid aside the clerical habit.
Among his works may be mentioned: *I Salmi tradotti dal testo ebraico comparato con le antiche versioni, con introduzione e note* (Florence 1895; 2nd ed., Rome 1905); *Le Lamentazioni di Geremia* (ibid. 1897); *Il Cantico dei Cantici tradotto e commentato* (ibid. 1898); *Il Nuovo Testamento tradotto ed annotato: I Vangeli* (ibid. 1900); *Le profezie di Isaia tradotte e commentate* (Bologna 1907); *La Genesi con discussioni critiche* (Florence 1908); *Mosè ed i libri mosaici* (Modena 1911); *Il Pantheon. Origini del cristianesimo* (Florence 1914); *Le perle della Bibbia: il Cantico dei Cantici e l'Ecclesiaste* (Bari 1924). This second edition of the *Cantico dei Cantici*, entirely different from the first, reveals a complete adherence to rationalist ideas already adopted in his works on the Pentateuch. Moreover, Minocchi’s output is rather popular in character, with clear literary aims.
