PERLO, FILIPPO. - Missionary bishop, b. at Caramagna (Piedmont) on 8 Feb. 1873, d. at Rome on 4 Nov. 1948. Having entered the Seminary of Fossano, he later moved to that of Turin, where he was ordained a priest in 1896. In the same year he obtained a degree in theology and in utroque iure.
When the Institute of the Consolata Missions (v.) was founded by Canon Allamano (v.), he was among the first to enroll (1901), and in 1902, together with Fr. Tommaso Gaya, he was part of the first expedition of missionaries to Kenya. Received by the chief of the Akikuyu, Karoli, whom he later converted, he established his first residence in Tuthù. The country, the people and the language were still poorly known. He explored Kikuyu, described its inhabitants and saw to the publication of grammars, lexicons and books. He founded about twenty mission stations, the Seminary, the monastery for the native sisters, workshops and schools of arts and crafts. Superior of the mission in 1905, he was consecrated in 1909 titular bishop of Maronea and appointed first vicar apostolic of Kenya.
From 1926 to 1929 he succeeded Canon Allamano in the direction of the Institute of the Consolata Missions.
In the missions of Kenya his brother Gabriele (Fossano 1879-Rome 1948) also carried out his apostolic work, later apostolic prefect of Benadir and first vicar apostolic of Mogadishu, titular bishop of Amizone (1927).
