Stentrup, Ferdinand

STENTRUP, FERDINAND. - Jesuit, theologian and forerunner of freedom of teaching, b. at Münster on 8 July 1831, d. at Kalksburg on 15 Aug. 1898.

A pupil of the German College in Rome (1850-58) and ordained a priest in 1856, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1858, and from teaching philosophy at Pressburg he passed to teaching theology at Innsbruck (1868-93).

The long years of study and teaching yielded various volumes of very important praelectiones, among them: De Deo uno (1878), De Verbo Incarnato (2 vols., 1882-89), De Trinitatis mysterio (1891). In 1877 he founded, together with Fr. J. Weller, the Zeitschrift für katholische Theologie, which he directed for a long time and to which he contributed various series of valuable articles: Begriff der Hypostase, Zur Lehre von der Genugthuung Christi, Der Staat und die Schule.
