VENARD, Jean-Théophane, Blessed. - B. Nov. 21, 1829 at St-Loup-sur-Thouet (Deux-Sèvres, France) and d. Feb. 2, 1861.

Already a subdeacon, he entered the Seminary of the Foreign Missions of Paris on March 3, 1851. Ordained a priest on June 5, 1852, he left on Sept. 19 of the same year for Hong Kong, and toward the end of 1853 he was sent to western Tonkin. Despite continual persecution and frail health, and amid great difficulties, he exercised his ministry in various places, using his periods of forced rest to translate into Annamese the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles and the Apocalypse. Following a denunciation he was arrested at Ke-beo on Nov. 30, 1860, and, shut up in a cage, was taken to Hanoi, where he was beheaded the following year. The body was buried at the very place of his execution and was exhumed in 1864 to be transported to Paris. The head, thrown into the Red River, was found two weeks later and is now venerated in the church of Ké-tru. He was beatified by Pius X on Apr. 11, 1909.
