Eximiam tuam
Apostolic letter to the Archbishop of Cologne on the condemnation of Anton Günther's works
TO OUR JOHN VIMINALI, PRIEST OF GEISSEL, ARCHBISHOP OF COLOGNE, PIUS POPE IX.
1 Your outstanding pastoral care, well known to Us, in defending Catholic doctrine We have perceived with no small joy of Our heart shining forth on all sides in the letter which you, beloved son, gave to Us on the sixteenth day of the coming month of April concerning the decree sanctioned by Our pontifical authority and issued by Our Congregation of the Index on the eighth day of the month of January of this year, by which the works of the beloved son, the presbyter Anthony Günther, were proscribed. We indeed, in fulfillment of the office of Our apostolic ministry, sparing no efforts and no labors, so that the deposit of faith divinely entrusted to Us might be kept whole and inviolate, as soon as We received from many most distinguished Fathers, the Sacred Bishops of Germany, that not a few things contained in Günther's books were thought by them to tend to the destruction of the truth of sincere Catholic faith, without any delay We entrusted the same matter to that Congregation, so that in the customary manner it might carefully and diligently examine, weigh, and investigate the works of the same Günther, and then report all things to Us. When therefore that Congregation, obedient to Our commands and joined to its duty, placed all care and effort skillfully and properly in this matter, grave indeed and of the greatest moment, and omitted no study in knowing and weighing the Güntherian doctrine with the most careful examination, it observed that many things found in Günther's books were altogether to be disapproved and condemned, as being most contrary to the doctrine of the Catholic Church. Hence, with all things also weighed by Us, that same Congregation issued that decree approved by Our supreme authority and well known to you, by which the Güntherian works are prohibited and forbidden. Which decree indeed, sanctioned by Our authority and published by Our command, ought plainly to have sufficed so that the entire question be considered thoroughly settled, and all who glory in the Catholic name might clearly and openly understand that they are altogether bound to obey, and that the doctrine contained in Günther's books cannot be held to be sincere, and that it be lawful for no one henceforth to defend and uphold the doctrine handed down in those books, and to read and retain those books without due permission. From which office of obedience and due submission no one could therefore be considered and deemed exempt, because in the same decree either no propositions were noted by name, or no certain and fixed censure was applied. The decree itself by its own force was sufficient so that no one might think himself free to depart in any way from those things which We have approved. But those err grievously who think that the cause of that general prohibition proceeded from the fact that the Congregation itself discovered no individual sentences of Günther's works and no precise opinions worthy of censure. For not without sorrow do We know most certainly that in those same works the erroneous and most pernicious system of rationalism, often condemned by this apostolic See, widely holds sway; likewise We know that in those same books there are read, among other things, not a few things which depart not a little from the Catholic faith and sincere explanation of the unity of the divine substance in three distinct and eternal persons; We have likewise ascertained that neither better nor more accurate are those things which are handed down concerning the sacrament of the Word Incarnate, and concerning the unity of the person of the divine Word in two natures, divine and human. We know that in those same books the Catholic sentiment and doctrine is injured concerning man, who is so absolved by body and soul that the soul and that rational soul is the true per se and immediate form of the body. Nor are We ignorant that there are taught and established in those same books things which are plainly contrary to the Catholic doctrine concerning the supreme freedom of God, freed from any necessity, in procreating things. And that also is to be disapproved and condemned most of all, that in the Güntherian books the right of magistracy is rashly attributed to human reason and philosophy, which in matters of religion ought not to rule but to serve entirely, and therefore all things are thrown into confusion which ought to remain most firm, both concerning the distinction between knowledge and faith, and concerning the perpetual immutability of faith, which is always one and the same, while philosophy and human disciplines neither always agree with themselves, nor are they free from the manifold variety of errors. It is added that neither is that reverence shown to the Holy Fathers which the canons of Councils prescribe, and which the most splendid lights of the Church most fully deserve, nor are they abstained from in Catholic schools by those criticisms which Our predecessor Pius VI of blessed memory solemnly condemned. Nor shall We pass over in silence that in the Güntherian books the sound manner of speaking is most greatly violated, and as if it were permitted to forget the words of the Apostle Paul (2 Tim.) or those things which Augustine most gravely warned (de C. D. lib. X. c. 23): "It is permitted to Us to speak according to a certain rule, lest the license of words should also beget an impious opinion concerning the things which are signified by them." From all which things you certainly see, beloved son, with what care and study both you and your suffragans, the Bishops, ought to be vigilant so that the Güntherian works be removed from these dioceses, and with what singular solicitude it ought to be watched over: lest the doctrine contained in those same works and now proscribed be in any way whatsoever handed down or approved hereafter by anyone either in philosophical or in theological disciplines. Now indeed, while We have deemed and deem that Günther's works ought to be condemned, We cannot but signify to you that the same beloved son, the presbyter Anthony Günther, has brought Us no small consolation, inasmuch as in his most obedient letters written to Us on the tenth day of February, with the highest praise of himself and in the most ample words, he has professed once and again that nothing is more desirable to him than always to obey Our supreme authority and that of this apostolic See, and therefore he humbly submits himself to the aforesaid decree concerning his works. This egregious example of Günther has been imitated with equal joy of Our heart by several beloved sons, doctors of theology, philosophy, ecclesiastical history, and canon law in various German lyceums and primary followers of the Güntherian doctrine, who in their letters given to Us have testified that they humbly submit themselves to the aforesaid decree and that nothing is more dear to their hearts than to obey the pontifical authority and that of this holy See with willing mind. While We rejoice exceedingly in this matter, We are raised to the further hope that all other followers of the Güntherian doctrine will, God aiding well, wish to emulate the Christian docility and obedience both of the author himself and of these, and the submission due to Our magistracy, and thus increase the crown of the author himself, and fill and complete Our joy. You have, beloved son, what We have deemed ought to be written back to you on this matter; and by this occasion also We most willingly use the opportunity to show again and confirm the principal benevolence with which We embrace you in the Lord. Of which also We wish to be a most certain pledge the apostolic blessing, which with the whole affection of Our heart We most lovingly impart to you yourself, beloved son, and to the flock committed to your vigilance. Given at Bologna on the fifteenth day of June in the year 1857, in the eleventh year of Our pontificate.

FF.
