Omnipotentis Dei

Bull establishing the primary Marian Congregation at the Roman College

Bull of Pope Gregory XIII ·

under the invocation of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, for the exercise of pious works; and the faculty of aggregating other congregations, with the communication of indulgences. Gregory, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual memory of the matter.

1 Following the example of Almighty God and our Saviour, who, from the superabundance of His mercy, continually pours into the hearts of the faithful the grace of heavenly inspiration and the ardour of devotion for the service of Divine Majesty and the salutary performance of pious works, We apply ourselves diligently to that care and concern of pastoral office by which the religion and devotion of those same faithful, engaged in such fruitful works and exercises, may receive continual increase, and the desired salvation of souls may come to them.

2 § 1. We have learned that many upright and pious young men, applying themselves to the study of good letters in our college of the Society of Jesus in the City, led by singular affection towards the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and also spurred on by the spiritual exhortations of their teachers and masters, have been accustomed to frequent the church of the Annunciation of the same Blessed Mary, situated in the body of the buildings of the said college, Beginning.

3 Pious young men engaged in the studies of the college of the Society of Jesus in the City have associated themselves to exercise the pious works here set forth.

4 Afterwards, in various parts of the world where the colleges of the said Society are located, scholars began to imitate the same.

5 Whence it seems fitting that a primary congregation be established in the said church in the City, from which the others have had their origin.

6 situated in the college, to frequent it on certain appointed days and hours, and with remarkable sincerity of devotion and contrite heart, to cleanse their conscience through the ministry of confession and the most holy Eucharist, and to engage in divine offices, spiritual conversations and exhortations, and other pious and salutary works, and from this example a greater concourse of others followed, and they associated themselves with one another in mutual studies. We, so that this pious institution might grow more abundantly, granted to the same and to other Christian faithful devoted to such spiritual works and exercises for the time being, certain indulgences and remissions of their sins, as is more fully contained in our letters made thereupon.

7 § 2. Since, however, as the petition recently presented to Us on behalf of our beloved son the General Superior of the said Society contained, in various parts of the world, and especially in the more notable cities of Europe, the colleges of the same Society, for adorning youth with good morals and virtues, and imbuing them with true piety and sound doctrine, have been propagated, and their external scholars, resorting there for the sake of studies, have begun to imitate with fervent zeal these excellent exercises of devotion and pious works, and thence manifold fruits have come forth to the glory of God and the worship of His divine Name, and the honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as well as the public welfare and spiritual consolation.

8 § 3. And it is worthy of consideration that, just as the institution of these pious and fruitful exercises had its beginning among the scholars of the said college in the City, which under our auspices and at our expense is being renewed and built from its foundations in a magnificent work of buildings and structures, in the said church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Mary, so also there should be established and instituted therein a primary congregation or primary sodality of the same scholars, under the title of the Annunciation of the Blessed Mary, for preserving and increasing their praiseworthy zeal in such pious works and offices by our benefits and the rewards of indulgences, it was humbly supplicated to Us on behalf of the same Superior that We should deign to assent to the foregoing and to provide thereupon opportunely with apostolic benignity.

9 § 4. We therefore, wishing to follow the pious will and affection of these religious men in their zeal for these spiritual exercises, and absolving the same Superior of the Society of Jesus by the tenor of these presents from any excommunication, suspension and interdict and other ecclesiastical sentences, censures and penalties, whether by law or by man, imposed on any occasion or cause, if he is bound by them in any way whatsoever, for the purpose of obtaining the effect of the present document only, and considering him absolved; and also holding the tenor of the aforesaid letters as expressed in these presents, inclined by these supplications, We do by apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents, erect and institute in perpetuity in the same church one primary congregation or sodality of the external scholars of our said college and also of other Christian faithful devoted to the aforesaid Society, under the title of the Annunciation of the Blessed Mary, which is to be directed by the aforesaid and for the time being existing General Superior of the said Society, or, upon his death, until another is canonically assumed to the office of General Superior, also by the Vicar General of the same Society, without prejudice, however, to the said Society.

10 § 5. But so that the primary congregation or primary sodality of this kind, through diligent care in the bestowal and distribution of heavenly gifts and favours, may continually make progress in devotion and piety, and in the increase of morals, it is entrusted to the almighty God,

GREGORY XIII PP. 501 A.D. 1584

11 In the visits and in his church on the day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Mary:

12 To the sodalists confessed on the days here expressed, he grants a plenary indulgence:

13 To the same ones accompanying the bodies of the deceased, or if they be hindered, praying for the deceased or for the infirm, trusting in the mercy and the authority of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, to all and each of the Christian faithful truly penitent and confessed, who henceforth shall be received into the sodalists of the same primary congregation or primary sodality, both on the day of their reception, if they shall have received the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist in the aforesaid church, or wherever they are able, on that day, and at the hour of death: § 6. Likewise to the same ones and to all and each of the other Christian faithful of either sex, truly penitent and confessed, and refreshed by holy Communion, who shall devoutly visit the aforesaid church on the day of the feast of the same Annunciation of the Blessed Mary, from first Vespers until the setting of the sun of that feast itself, and shall there devoutly pour forth prayers to God, as devotion shall suggest to each one, for the preservation and increase of Christian commonwealth, the extirpation of heresies, the mutual and universal peace of Christian princes, and the prosperity of ourselves and of the Roman Pontiffs existing for the time being, or otherwise:

14 § 7. Moreover to the same sodalists, likewise truly penitent and confessed, who on the feast days of the Nativity and Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of the Annunciation, Assumption and Conception, as well as the Nativity of the Blessed Mary the Virgin, shall have received the aforesaid most holy Sacrament there or elsewhere, a plenary indulgence and remission of all their sins, by apostolic authority and in the manner aforesaid, we mercifully grant and bestow in the Lord.

15 § 8. And to the same sodalists, who from their number or from among other Christian faithful shall have accompanied the bodies of the deceased to ecclesiastical burial.

16 § 9. Or if infirm or hindered, upon hearing the sound of the bell, kneeling, if infirmity permit, shall have recited the Lord's Prayer and the Hail Mary, for the salvation of the soul of the deceased or the body of the infirm.

17 § 10. Likewise those who shall have attended congregations, both public and private, and divine offices, spiritual conferences, exhortations and other pious works, even ordained by the primary congregation or primary sodality for the suffrage of a sodalist or of other Christian faithful deceased, and approved by the same prefect or vicar general, and who shall have been present at the sacrifice of the Mass on feast days.

18 § 11. Or in the evening time, before going to bed, shall have diligently examined their conscience.

19 § 12. Or shall have visited poor infirm persons, both the infirm and others, in hospitals or infirmaries, as well as the imprisoned in prisons, and the imprisoned in houses.

20 § 13. Or shall have made peace between enemies and reconciled the hostile, as often as any of these things shall have been done, one year of the penances enjoined upon them or otherwise in any way owed, by apostolic authority and in the manner likewise, we also mercifully remit in the Lord.

21 § 14. Any other indulgences and remissions of sins not expressed in the present, even plenary ones, and relaxations of penances granted to the scholars and others aforesaid, by reason of their said institute, or otherwise in common by us and the Apostolic See in any way whatsoever, revoking and abrogating.

22 § 15. Moreover, lest the aforesaid sodalists, if it should happen that they be absent from the City itself or dwell elsewhere, remain deprived of the effect and fruit of such indulgences and other spiritual graces, to the same sodalists dwelling outside the City in any places whatsoever for the time being, so that in the places where it shall happen that they reside or dwell for the time being, they may observe and carry out the aforesaid works, which the sodalists themselves present in the City ought to observe for the obtaining of each of these indulgences, remissions and relaxations, at the churches of those places or elsewhere, as they are able, they may have all the same indulgences, remissions and relaxations, and these may likewise avail them.

23 § 16. Likewise, both in the City and elsewhere, those members of the said congregation or primary sodality of the City who, by visiting the churches of the said City and outside its walls, which are customarily visited by the Christian faithful for obtaining indulgences and remissions, during each Lent and at other times of the year and on the days of the stations, [visiting] the church of the said Society, if it shall be there, or otherwise another church or chapel in the places where they happen to reside or stay for the time being, as aforesaid, shall devoutly have visited, and shall have recited there seven times the Lord's Prayer and seven times the Hail Mary, shall obtain as many and the same indulgences as they would obtain if at those same times and days they personally visited each of the churches of the said City and outside its walls thus appointed for the same stations and for obtaining indulgences, and fully fulfilled all and singular things which are required in any way for obtaining such graces.

24 § 17. Furthermore, to the same superior or vicar general for the time being, in order that those aggregated in whatever other collections of the said Society erected throughout the whole world now and for the time being, or in their churches, for the increase of their pious works, whatever other or whichever other congregations or sodalities of scholars there pursuing the study of letters and of other Christian faithful devoted to the said Society, under the title of the Annunciation of the Blessed Mary, which from the same primary congregation or primary sodality as members from the head depend, by our authority, without however prejudice to the Society or to the colleges and churches aforesaid, to erect and institute.

25 § 18. And those or that [congregation] to the same primary congregation or primary sodality to communicate graces and indulgences; to aggregate, and to those thus erected, instituted and aggregated and to their members the aforesaid and all and whatsoever other indulgences, remissions of sins, relaxations, graces and faculties, both spiritual and temporal, by us and the said See to the primary congregation or primary sodality hereafter to be granted, so that the members of other congregations or of other sodalities of this kind, observing and executing those things which the members of the same primary congregation or primary sodality, for obtaining these indulgences, remissions and relaxations, ought to observe and execute, may likewise obtain the same indulgences, remissions and relaxations of sins, with the faculty of aggregating and granting these graces to others alone excepted, to communicate. § 19. Likewise both the primary or primary, and all and singular to be aggregated to it congregations or all and singular sodalities to be aggregated to it of this kind, through itself or through another or others of the same Society, priests suitable for this to be appointed by it, to visit, and for their happy state, governance and direction whatsoever statutes, constitutions and decrees, lawful however and honest and not contrary to the sacred canons and the decrees of the Council of Trent, as well as to be examined and approved by the same superior or vicar, if by another or others to be appointed these things are done, to issue; and, after they have been issued, as often as for their and the times' quality or otherwise it shall seem expedient to it, to change, correct, moderate and reform, or other things from the beginning to draw up, freely and lawfully it may be able, the same by apostolic authority and tenor, perpetually we grant and indulge. Decreeing that these statutes, constitutions and decrees, after they have been issued, changed, corrected, moderated, reformed and drawn up, ought to be inviolably observed by all the aforesaid members.

26 § 20. And the present letters, under whatsoever clauses and similar or dissimilar indults and other graces revocations, suspensions, limitations, derogations, and other contrary dispositions, even in favor of the basilica of the Prince of the Apostles of the City or of the Holy Cross or otherwise, by us or other Roman Pontiffs our successors or the said See, even by our own motion and from certain knowledge, by the fullness of apostolic power, or at the instance of any whatsoever, even emperors, kings, queens, dukes and other princes, for the time being in any way made, in no way to be comprehended, but always excepted from those, and as often as those shall emanate, so often to be restored to their pristine state, replaced and fully reintegrated and anew granted and deemed; nor also to all whom those concern to avail; irritum also and void, if otherwise concerning these things by anyone, by whatever authority, knowingly or unknowingly, it shall happen to be attempted.

27 § 21. Notwithstanding the foregoing and our clause concerning indulgences not to be granted in the manner of non-revocation, and other apostolic constitutions and ordinances, and all other things to the contrary whatsoever, the present [document] to endure for perpetual future times.

28 § 22. We will moreover that copies of the same aforesaid documents, even printed ones, subscribed by the hand of the secretary of the same Society or a public notary, and furnished with the seal of some person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity or existing for the time being as superior or vicar general of the same Society, shall everywhere in all places receive the same faith entirely, in judgment and outside of judgment, as would be given to the same present [documents], if they were exhibited or shown.

29 Let no one therefore, etc.

GREGORIO XIII PP. 501 An.C. 1584

29 Nulli ergo etc.
