interdict or the use of the Crusade or any other privilege for choosing confessors and obtaining such absolutions and dispensations.1
Pius, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.

1 The circumspect benignity of the Roman Pontiff, regarding the honest petitions of those requesting it, which concern the state and wholesome direction of persons serving the Most High under the yoke of Religion, willingly admits to the grace of a hearing, and pursues them with appropriate favors.1 1 Concerning these brothers, see also in the constitution of Honorius III, Religiosam, vol. III, p. 309; and concerning the sisters, see likewise in the constitution of Innocent IV, Sedis, vol. IV, p. 636.

2 The circumspect benignity of the Roman Pontiff, regarding the honest petitions of those requesting it, which concern the state and wholesome direction of persons serving the Most High under the yoke of Religion, willingly admits to the grace of a hearing, and pursues them with appropriate favors.

3 § 1. Our beloved son, the prior provincial of the province of Spain, of the Order of Friars Preachers, recently caused it to be set forth to us that, although in the bull of the Holy Crusade and in other privileges which are accustomed to be granted by the Apostolic See, there is given the faculty of choosing a suitable confessor, approved by the ordinary, who is able to absolve the Christian faithful from cases reserved to the ordinary, and from some also which are reserved to the said See, nevertheless the religious of the said Order, or some of them, presume also to use these faculties, and under their pretext choose a confessor sometimes other than those who have been appointed by their prelates for hearing their confessions, which sometimes turns to their particular detriment. Wherefore the aforesaid prior humbly besought us that we would deign to provide appropriately in the foregoing matters by apostolic benignity.

4 § 2. We therefore, wishing to obviate the inconveniences of this matter, and absolving the same prior from any excommunication, suspension, interdict and other sentences, censures and penalties, from law or from man, for any occasion or cause whatsoever, by which he is bound in any way, for the purpose of these presents alone, and holding him to be absolved, inclined by these supplications, declare by apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents, that such concession of the Holy Crusade and of other particular indults, insofar as concerns the aforesaid article of choosing a confessor and of absolving from reserved cases, shall in no way have place, nor be held to have place, with the brothers and monastic sisters of the whole of the said Order, as well of the province of Spain as elsewhere wherever they may be, but that it is our will and intention that the same brothers and sisters, insofar as concerns the administration of the sacrament of Penance or Confession, shall be subject to the disposition of their prelates.

5 We perpetually declare by apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents: commanding and enjoining the same prelates, however, that in the use of this power they show themselves benign and easy with their subjects.

6 § 3. And moreover, because the sacred ecumenical Council of Trent granted to bishops that they might absolve in the forum of the soul or conscience from all sins, and dispense in irregularities, as is set forth in session XXIV, chapter VI, lest the prior conventual and superior prelates of the said whole Order, as well in the said province as elsewhere wherever they may be, should be in a worse condition than clerics or seculars in this matter, we concede and grant to the same prior conventual and superior prelates, by the same authority and tenor, and also perpetually, that they themselves by themselves may do entirely the same in the brothers and sisters of the said Order subject to them, which bishops can do in clerics and lay persons subject to them, both as regards absolving and dispensing in such matters, as well as in all other faculties whatsoever; and we also declare this.

7 § 4. Decreeing that these present letters shall endure and have force, and under any revocations, suspensions, alterations, derogations or other contrary dispositions whatsoever of similar or dissimilar concessions, indulgences and graces, even by us and our successors, the Roman Pontiffs for the time being existing, or by the Apostolic See, even for any cause, or otherwise howsoever, canonically or in fact, now and for the time being made and to be made, shall in no way be comprehended, but shall always be excepted from them, and as often as those shall be issued, so often shall they be restored to their pristine and most valid state and newly granted, and ought to be held and deemed and avail in law. We also decree null and void if anything otherwise should be attempted in these matters by anyone whatsoever, of any authority, knowingly or unknowingly.

8 § 5. Notwithstanding the foregoing and any apostolic rescripts whatsoever, as well as universal, provincial and synodal councils issued, special or general constitutions and ordinances; and also any statutes and customs, even those strengthened by oath, apostolic confirmation or any other firmness; likewise privileges, indults and apostolic letters, granted, approved and renewed to any persons whatsoever, under whatsoever tenors and forms, and in any other manner whatsoever; all and singular of which, even if special, specific, individual and express mention of them and their full tenors ought to be made, or some other exquisite form observed for this purpose, we hold the tenors of these things as sufficiently expressed as if they were inserted word for word, nothing whatsoever omitted, and the form transmitted in them observed, and which would otherwise remain in their force, we on this occasion alone specially and expressly derogate from, and from all other things contrary whatsoever; or if to any persons, collectively or individually, it has been indulged by the same See that they cannot be interdicted, suspended or excommunicated through apostolic letters not making full and express and word-for-word mention of this indult. Given at Rome at St. Peter's, under the Fisherman's Ring, on 21 July 1571, in the sixth year of our pontificate.

9 Given on 21 July 1571, pontificate year vi.
