MOTU PROPRIO SULLE FESTE. GIORNI

9 V. Se una delle feste che vogliamo osservate cada in un giorno consacrato all'astinenza o al digiuno, da entrambi dispensiamo;

MOTU PROPRIO DE FESTIS. DIEBUS

6 II. Dies festi Sancti Ioseph, Sponsi Beatae Mariae Virginis, et Nativitatis Sancti Ioannis Baptistae, uterque cum octava, celebrabuntur, tamquam in sede propria, prior, Dominica insequente diem XIX Martii, immoto permanente festo si dies XIX Martii in Dominicam incidat ; alter, Dominica quae festum Sanctorum Petri et Pauli Apostolorum antecedat. Festum vero Sanctissimi Corporis Christi, idemque cum octava privilegiata, Dominica post Sanctissimam Trinitatem, tamquam in sede propria, celebrabitur, statuta pro festo Sacratissimi Cordis Iesu feria VI intra octavam.

7 III.

9 V. Quod si in aliquod ex festis quae servata volumus, dies incidat abstinentiae vel ieiunio consecratus, ab utroque dispensamus;

MOTU PROPRIO ON FEAST DAYS

1 The Roman Pontiffs, as guardians and rulers of the supreme discipline of the Church, have been accustomed to relax the sanctions of the sacred Canons benignly whenever the good of the Christian people counseled it. We ourselves, just as we have already deemed other matters to be changed on account of altered conditions of the times and of civil society, so also in the present matter do we judge that the ecclesiastical law concerning feast days to be observed by precept should be appropriately tempered on account of the particular circumstances of the age. For vast expanses of land and sea are now traversed by men with wonderful speed, and they gain easier access through more expeditious routes to those nations in which the number of feast days of precept is smaller. Commerce has also increased, and the swift conduct of business appears to suffer somewhat from the interruption caused by the frequent intervening feast days. And finally, the ever-increasing price of things necessary for life adds incentive lest the services and labors be more often interrupted by those whose livelihood must be obtained by toil. For these reasons, repeated petitions, especially in these recent times, have been addressed to the Holy See that the number of feast days of precept be reduced.

2 Acta Apostolicae Sedis.—Official Commentary.

3 Reflecting upon all these matters in Our mind, We who have the salvation of the one Christian people at heart, have judged it most opportune to reduce the feast days to be observed by the mandate of the Church.

4 Therefore, by Our Motu Proprio and mature deliberation, and having taken counsel of Our Venerable Brethren the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church who are engaged in reducing the laws of the Church into a Code, We decree that the following concerning feast days are to be observed.

5 I. The following days alone shall remain subject to the ecclesiastical precept of hearing Mass and of abstaining from servile works: All and each of the Lord's Days, the feasts of the Nativity, Circumcision, Epiphany, and Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Immaculate Conception and Assumption of the Blessed Mary, Mother of God, the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and finally All Saints.

6 II. The feast of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, each with its octave, shall be celebrated, as in their proper place, the former on the Sunday following the nineteenth of March, the feast remaining unchanged if the nineteenth of March falls on a Sunday; the latter on the Sunday which precedes the feast of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul. But the feast of the Most Holy Body of Christ, and the same with its privileged octave, shall be celebrated on the Sunday after the Most Holy Trinity, as in its proper place, with the feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus appointed for Friday within the octave.

7 III. The feast days of Patrons are not subject to the ecclesiastical precept mentioned above. However, the Ordinaries of places may transfer the external solemnity to the following Sunday.

8 IV. Wherever any of the enumerated feasts has been legitimately abolished or transferred, nothing shall be changed without consulting the Apostolic See. But if in any nation or region the Bishops shall judge that any of the abrogated feasts ought to be preserved, let them refer the matter to the Holy See.

9 V. And if any of the feasts which We wish to be observed should fall on a day consecrated to abstinence or fasting, We dispense from both;

10 and We grant the same dispensation also for the feasts of Patrons, abolished by this Our law, if however they happen to be celebrated solemnly and with great concourse of people. Offering in this way a new token of Apostolic solicitude, We cherish the firm hope that the faithful everywhere will show their piety toward God and their veneration of the Saints on those days also which We now strike from the number of feasts bound by precept, no less than before, and will take care to observe the precept on the other feast days which remain to be kept in the Church with more diligent study than heretofore. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary, although worthy of special and individual mention.

11 Given at Rome, at St. Peter's, on the second day of the month of July, 1911, in the eighth year of Our Pontificate.
