Adolescentum Neophytorum i.

College of Adolescent Neophytes i.

1 Gregory, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.

Preamble.

2 Holding His place, though unworthy, upon the earth, He who wills all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth, we ought to extend our apostolic care and the affection of our charity to all parts in such manner that we cease not to desire and to seek with all our strength not only the repentance of heretics and schismatics wandering from the path of orthodox faith, but also the true conversion and salvation of those who, walking in the darkness of infidelity, miserably perish, especially of the Jews.

3 § 1. With this intention, we have already for some time ordered that on each day of the Sabbath in a certain oratory in the Eternal City Christ our Saviour, once promised to their ancient fathers and prophets, be announced and preached to the Jews in the Hebrew tongue; whereby it has come to pass that some of them, illuminated by heavenly grace and mercy shining upon them, have received the faith of Christ and been baptized, and now frequently both these Jews and others, renouncing the Mahometan impiety which they followed, inspired by the same grace, are baptized.

4 § 2. Therefore, being intent upon the cause of the Christian faith, with such provision and establishment and increase as we are able to accomplish, and wishing both to provide for the welfare and instruction of those boys and adolescents who from among Jews, Turks, Moors and similar Mahometans have recently been converted to the faith of Christ and are being converted daily, God aiding, and also to provide that from among them there may come forth workers suitable for the work of the Gospel, who in the same 1 From the Register in the Secret of Briefs.

5 Designated revenues.

6 Privileges granted to the members and others of the same college in the Eternal City and in other places of Italy, and indeed in all parts of the world in which Jews and infidels dwell, so that they may be able and have power to explain, teach and preach the mysteries of the Christian faith, even in their own language, whether Hebrew or Arabic, we have judged nothing more opportune than to erect a proper college for instructing these same persons; to the glory therefore of God Almighty and to the exaltation of holy Christian faith, in the same Eternal City and in a place chosen for this purpose, we do by our own motion, from certain knowledge and from the fullness of apostolic power, by the tenor of these presents, erect and establish one ecclesiastical college, to be called the College of Adolescent Neophytes, which indeed shall consist for two parts of those withdrawing from Judaism; for the third part, however, of those withdrawing from Mahometanism, whether Turks or Moors or of any other nation whatsoever, who have recently embraced the Christian faith, or at least, these not existing, have been born of neophyte parents; and to the same college, until we shall have made sufficient provision from other revenues, we assign for the cause of sustenance and endowment one hundred gold pieces from our own funds and those of the Apostolic Camera or the table of the Datary, to be paid out in each month.

7 § 3. We will, moreover, that the same college and its rectors, stewards, masters, teachers and scholars existing therein for the time being, and their servants, officials and ministers, and the college's goods, movable and immovable, of whatsoever quality and quantity existing in the said Eternal City and without and elsewhere in all places, be exempt from all jurisdiction, correction, visitation, dominion, superiority and power of the senator existing for the time being, as well as of the conservators and reformers of the said City, and also of the rector of the General University, the vicar of the City and of any ordinary of places or any other judges and officials whatsoever constituted in the same City or elsewhere; and we exempt and entirely free the same college and those contracting with them in their own affairs and goods from the payment and exaction of whatsoever (as they are called) tolls, gabelles, bulletins, tithes and any other burden whatsoever, whether ordinary or extraordinary, imposed and to be imposed from whatsoever cause, and we take them up and place them under the protection of Blessed Peter and the Apostolic See and our own, and subject them immediately to us and the said See, and declare them free, immune and exempt.

8 § 4. To the same college also, to the scholars, rectors and stewards, that by whatsoever privileges, exemptions, liberties, faculties and indults by which the General University of the Eternal City and its rector and doctors teaching therein in any way use, enjoy and possess, and shall be able to use, enjoy and possess in any manner whatsoever in the future, in like manner and equally they may be able to use, enjoy and possess in all things and through all things, we grant and indulge, and communicate the same to them.

9 § 5. Likewise to the senator, conservators, reformers and rector and other judges, officials and aforesaid persons, and to the camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church existing for the time being, to the presidents and clerks of the Apostolic Chamber, and to any commissioners appointed for the time being for the exaction of tithes and other burdens aforesaid, we strictly forbid that, under the pretext of any letters whatsoever granted to them under whatsoever tenor and form, they molest the college, scholars, rectors, oeconomi, officials and ministers aforesaid or any of them in the foregoing matters in any way, or permit them to be molested.

10 § 6. And furthermore to the rectors and superiors of the said college, with the assistance of the cardinal protectors, who shall exist for the time being, or of any one of them, or by their counsel and express consent, we grant free faculty and power by the same authority to promote those whom they shall find to have studied in the said college and elsewhere for the requisite time, and to be fit in learning and morals, to the degrees of bachelor, licentiate, doctorate and master, observing the form of the Council of Vienne, according to the custom of the University of the same City or otherwise, and to exhibit to them the customary insignia of those degrees; and that those thus promoted may read and interpret the faculties in which they have studied, and dispute concerning them, and exercise whatever acts are fitting for such degree or degrees; and that they may use, enjoy and possess all and singular the graces, favors, prerogatives and indults, by which others promoted to the aforesaid degrees in the aforesaid or other Universities and elsewhere, according to the constitutions and customs of that and other Universities of this kind, by right or custom use, enjoy and possess, even as if they had received the aforesaid degrees in the University itself, according to the aforesaid customs and practices, we grant and concede by the same authority free faculty and power.

11 § 7. But in order that the conservation of the said college and its good governance, both in those matters which pertain to instruction and discipline, and in those which pertain to food, clothing and other such necessities, may be more opportunely provided for, we constitute and appoint as protectors of the same college our beloved sons William Sirlet, titular presbyter of St. Lawrence in Panisperna, and Julius Antonius, titular presbyter of St. Bartholomew in the Island of St. Severina, and our beloved son Philip Vastavillanus, deacon of St. Mary New, cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, by whose counsel and aid the aforesaid and all other matters whatsoever pertaining to admitting scholars to the college, retaining them or dismissing them shall be done, determined and ordained; giving to them and to the protectors existing for the time being full and free faculty and authority, for the healthful direction and conservation of the said college and its goods and things and rights, both temporal and spiritual, to appoint and remove oeconomi, advocates, procurators and other ministers and officials in it, and to substitute others in their place, and to make and issue ordinances and statutes, provided they be lawful and honest and not repugnant to the sacred canons and the Council of Trent; and to revoke, alter, correct and newly enact them when it shall seem good, which, after they have been made, issued, revoked, altered and corrected, we will that they be held in the same manner as if they had been approved and confirmed by apostolic authority; and that they be inviolably observed by all rectors, masters, scholars and other persons serving and ministering in the college, and according to their disposition be judged and decided by any judges whatsoever, with any other faculty of judging taken away from them, and if it should happen that anything contrary to this be attempted by anyone whatsoever, by any authority, knowingly or unknowingly, we decree it to be null and void.

12 § 8. We also will that the same college shall not be bound to present and cause these letters to be registered in the Apostolic Chamber, as was provided by the constitution of our predecessor Pope Pius IV of blessed memory, issued on the eighth day before the Ides of August in the eighth year of his pontificate; but that it shall have the same force and obtain the same firmness and validity as if it had been presented and registered in the same Chamber within the time prescribed by that constitution.

13 § 9. Notwithstanding the apostolic constitutions and ordinances; and the statutes and customs of the said City, strengthened by oath, apostolic confirmation or any other firmness; and also the privileges, indults and apostolic letters granted, approved and renewed to the same senator, conservators, reformers, camerlengo, Universities and their colleague rectors and persons, and others aforesaid, and also to the said City and the Roman people, under whatsoever tenors and forms, and with whatsoever clauses and decrees, even repeatedly granted; all of which, their tenors being held as sufficiently expressed herein, remaining otherwise in their force, we on this occasion specially and expressly derogate from, and from all other things whatsoever to the contrary.

14 § 10. Let no one therefore be permitted to infringe this page of Our erection, institution, assignment, will, exemption, liberation, reception, collation, subjection, declaration, concession, indult, communication, inhibition, grant, constitution, deputation, decree and derogation, or to dare to act contrary to it with rash presumption; but if anyone should presume to attempt this, let him know that he will incur the indignation of almighty God and of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul. Given at Rome, in the year of Our Lord's Incarnation one thousand five hundred seventy-seven, on the first day of September, in the sixth year of Our pontificate.

15 Given 1 September 1577, pontificate year vi.
