ADANA. - A city of Cilicia, situated on the Saihun River, an ancient Greek episcopal see dependent on the see of Tauro. When the Armenian kingdom was established in Cilicia, the see of A. too passed to the Armenian patriarchate. In the 12th-14th centuries, after the destruction of the major cities and the Egyptian invasion of Cilicia, A. became an important historical and religious centre of Armenian Cilicia. In 1310, the agreement concerning the succession to the throne of Cyprus was concluded at A. before the delegates of the Pope, and in 1316 the penultimate general national Armenian synod was convened there.

THE COUNCIL OF A. - Convened in the year 1313 under the presidency of Patriarch Costantino, it confirmed the decrees of the Council of Sis, which had laboured greatly for union with the Roman Church. Having pronounced anathema against Eutyches and affirmed the existence of two natures in Jesus Christ, the members of the council decreed that thenceforth the feast of Christmas should be celebrated on 25 Dec., distinct from the feast of the Epiphany and of the baptism of Our Lord, which was celebrated on 6 Jan.
