ALBERTO GLOSSATOR. – Archpriest of S. Agata in Bologna, a distinguished jurist, flourished between the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th.
He wrote an *apparatus* on the *Compilatio secunda*, which some scholars, misled by the siglum “a” appended to the glosses, erroneously attributed to the master Alanus, who in the same glosses is always indicated by the sigla “A” or “al.” The author proves himself well acquainted with the state of the Church in Spain, England, France, and Italy, especially at Ravenna, Bologna, and Rome. Since he does not know the decrees of the Fourth Lateran Council, it is reasonable to infer that the *apparatus* was composed beforehand.
