ALBERTO GLOSSATORE. — Archpriest of S. Agata in Bologna and an eminent jurist, he flourished between the end of the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth.
He wrote an “apparatus” to the Second Compilation, which some scholars, misled by the siglum “a” attached to the glosses, wrongly attributed to Master Alano, who, on the contrary, is always indicated in the same glosses by the sigla “A” or “al.” The author shows himself to be well acquainted with the situation of the Church in Spain, England, France, and Italy, especially in Ravenna, Bologna, and Rome. Since he does not know the decrees of the Fourth Lateran Council, it is reasonable to argue that the apparatus predates II.
