ALEOTTI, ANTONIO. - Painter of the school of Ferrara, b. at Argenta, was active between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th. The only document concerning him (1498) relates to disputes with his wife. Works certainly by him are the Dead Christ of 1498 (Gallery of Ferrara) and an altarpiece with the Madonna enthroned between Sts. Michael and Anthony Abbot of 1510 (Pinacoteca of Cesena), which shows the influence of Ercole and of the Zaganelli. Attributed to him are a polyptych with the Madonna enthroned between Sts. Peter, James, John the Baptist and Paul (dated 1494) and, by the more recent criticism (Federico Zeri), the panels with Sts. Bartholomew and Lawrence (Museum of Nancy), Sts. John the Evangelist and Nicholas of Bari (Museum of Toulouse), assigned instead by Berenson to the Master of the Gardner Annunciation and stylistically datable to the period of the Dead Christ.
