ANGELBERGA (ENGELBERGA, INGELBERGA). -
Empress, d. 890. Of Lombard stock and of a family long established in Italy, a woman of extraordinary energy and ambition, she exercised considerable influence over Ludovico II, whom she married in October 851. She accompanied her husband on the campaign against the Saracens in southern Italy and, like him, was held prisoner for forty days by Adelchi, prince of Benevento. She founded at Piacenza the monastery of S. Sisto, to which she retired after the death of her husband in 875. Later she became abbess of the monastery of S. Giulia at Brescia. Highly cultivated and intelligent, she also wrote several letters to Pope Giovanni VIII.
