ANGELICO OF BARI. - Franciscan ascetical writer, of the province of the Reformed Friars of Bari, lecturer in theology, d. in 1704 at Bitetto. He collected his instructions "de modo orandi," which he gave every Saturday to his confreres, in the volume Sentiero di spirito, o sia Regola che guida le anime a Dio per le tre vie, purgativa, illuminativa ed unitiva, Venice 1704.

It is a complete exposition, more theoretical than practical, of the doctrines concerning Christian perfection; it draws on the Fathers, the Scholastics, especially St. Bonaventure and Henry Herp (v. ARPHIUS), and the principal modern authors; it upholds the fundamental theses of the Franciscan school (the primacy of love, the imitation of Christ and devotion to the mysteries of his life, the Immaculate Conception). It does not linger to combat false spiritual doctrines; but in order not to use a term profaned by the "most wicked quietist Molinos" it calls the prayer of quiet "prayer of tranquillity" (part IV, ch. 42).
