ARRIGONI, GIULIO. - Archbishop, b. in Bergamo on 22 Sept. 1806, d. in Lucca on 9 Jan. 1875. After completing his early studies in the diocesan seminary, in 1821 he entered the Order of Friars Minor; he was sent to Italian Switzerland to exercise his ministry there. Wishing to devote himself to the missions, he went to Rome, where he revealed himself above all as an orator, so much so that he was soon reputed to be among the best preachers in Italy. In 1844 he was appointed professor of dogmatic theology at the University of Pisa. In 1848 he composed, in agreement with G. B. Giorgini, the original draft of the Tuscan Statute. Elected by Pius IX Archbishop of Lucca on 5 Nov. 1849, he proved himself a man of government, endowed with singular energy, wholly devoted to the improvement of ecclesiastical discipline and to the progress of sound studies among the clergy.
