AZZI, ORAZIO (IGNAZIO) degli. — Franciscan exegete, b. at Parma on 27 Apr. 1673, d. 11 Nov. 1757. Within the Order he was a lecturer in theology and definitor; he was dear to the popes Clement XII and Benedict XIV, to whom he dedicated his various commentaries on Holy Scripture, especially on Genesis (1707), the Psalms, and the Canticle.
His major work is Esposizioni letterali e morali sopra la S. Scrittura (13 vols., 4°, Venice 1736-1746). His style was criticized for prolixity; however, he strove to amend II. Around 1740 he was admitted to the Albrizzian Literary Society of Venice.
