AZZI, ORAZIO (IGNAZIO) degli. – Franciscan exegete, born in Parma on 27 April 1673, died on 11 November 1757. In the Order he was a lecturer in theology and definitor; he was held in high regard by Popes Clement XII and Benedict XIV, to whom he dedicated his various commentaries on Sacred Scripture, especially on Genesis (1707), the Psalms, and the Song of Songs.
His major work is Literal and Moral Expositions on Sacred Scripture (13 vols., in quarto, Venice 1736–1746). His style was criticized for its prolixity; he nevertheless endeavored to amend II. Around 1740 he was admitted to the Albrizziana Literary Society of Venice.
