BAGNO, GIOVANNI FRANCESCO GUIDI di. - Cardinal, humanist, and diplomat, b. in Firenze on 4 Oct. 1578, of Romagnol origin. He studied at Firenze, Pisa, and Bologna. Having come to Rome, he entered the prelature and served as secretary to Card. Pietro Aldobrandini, legate to France. On his return he was appointed vice-legate of Avignone, and subsequently of the Marche and Campania. He was governor in several cities of the Ecclesiastical State; nuncio in Flanders in 1621, bishop of Cervia and nuncio to Parigi in 1627, created cardinal by Urbano VIII in the same year and proclaimed in the Consistory of 19 Nov. 1629. Bishop of Rieti in 1635, he resigned the bishopric in 1638 and, having returned to Rome, died there on 25 July 1641.
