BAGNO, GIOVANNI FRANCESCO GUIDI di. — Cardinal, humanist, and diplomat, born in Florence on 4 Oct. 1578, of Romagna origin. He studied in Florence, Pisa, and Bologna. Coming to Rome, he entered the prelature and served as secretary to Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, legate to France. Upon his return he was named vice-legate of Avignon, and later of the Marches and Campania. He governed several cities of the Papal States; was nuncio in Flanders in 1621, bishop of Cervia and nuncio in Paris in 1627, created cardinal by Urban VIII in the same year and published in the Consistory of 19 Nov. 1629. Bishop of Rieti in 1635, he resigned the see in 1638 and returned to Rome on 30 July 1641.
