CONTINI, GIOVANBATTISTA. - Architect, b. in Rome in 1641 and d. there in 1723. Rather than from his father Francesco, an architect of very limited abilities, he drew his training from the work of Bernini, whose simpler manners and more classicizing aspects he continued. In Rome he decorated several chapels, among them that of St. Rita in St. Augustine's and that of St. Peter of Alcantara in St. Mary in Aracoeli; at Montecassino he built the so-called Loggia del Paradiso and the library, then the church of St. Dominic in Ravenna, and in northern Lazio other religious buildings at Vignanello, Vetralla, etc., always in very composed forms. His best work remains the church of the Stigmata in Rome, which after his death received its facade from A. Canevari; in it the approximations to the spatial interpretation of the late Baroque are evident.
