COURTECUISSE (Brièvecuisse, Breviscoxa), Jean. - Born at Haleine (Orne) around 1353, he was one of the most active churchmen during the Western Schism; he held benefices in various dioceses; he was an orator of renown, and taught at the Collège de Navarre in Paris (doctor sublimis), where he was also rector. Almoner of the king, member of the Grand Council, chancellor of the Chapter of Paris, he had dealings with Benedict XIII and Gregory XII, carrying out pacifying work to heal the schism. Elected bishop of Paris on 27 Dec. 1420, he could not remain there because of political factions; he was transferred to Geneva by the Pope on 12 June 1422;
d. at the age of seventy on 4 March 1423.

Of his numerous unpublished works only the Tractatus de Fide et Ecclesia, Romano Pontifice et Concilio generali has been published, among the Opera omnia of Gerson (I, Antwerp 1706, coll. 805-903), where he teaches that the Pope can err, but not the Church assembled in ecumenical Council, and that the latter has the right to judge the Pope in case of heresy.
