DIODATI, GIOVANNI. - Protestant exegete, b. in Geneva in 1576 to an emigrated Lucchese family, and d. there on 3 Oct. 1649. At only 21 years of age he obtained the chair of Hebrew language and then that of theology, held for 40 years in his native city. A friend of Paolo Sarpi, he translated his Storia del Concilio di Trento into French (Geneva 1621).
He became famous for his Italian translation of the Bible, printed for the first time in Geneva in 1607, corrected and reprinted in 1641, then reproduced in numerous editions by the English Bible Society. The version has its merits, more as regards the Old Testament than the New, since he knew Hebrew better than Greek, yet in several passages the translator's Protestant tendency is noticeable. Thus the "Ave, Gratia plena" (Lk. 1:28) is translated "Ben ti sia, o favorita" and in Acts 14:22, where the Catholic translation has: "Paul and Barnabas, after having ordained presbyters for them with prayers and fastings," D. translates: "And after they had ordained elders for each church by common votes," etc. He published a French translation of the Bible (Geneva 1644), but it was not successful; and a Commentary (ibid. 1649).
