**DE SANCTIS, Luigi.** - Apostate, b. at Rome on 31 Dec. 1808, d. at Florence on 31 Dec. 1869. While still young he entered the Order of the Ministers of the Sick (Clerks Regular), was ordained priest (1831) and served as parish priest of S. Maria Maddalena in Rome. Doubts of faith, political disappointments and, it seems, relations with the apostate ex-Dominican Giacinto Achilli, led him to flee in 1847 to Malta, where he formally apostatized before the
